The Best Gluten Free Crackers

Since crackers are one of the first gluten free food substitutes that I ever tried that actually tasted good, I think it’s fitting to make them the topic of my first product review blog. Note, this post is going to focus on neutral, plain flavored crackers.

Stay tuned for upcoming posts on flavored crackers, including the new Gluten Free Cheez-Its, whenever I can finally manage to snag myself a box!

Blue Diamond Nut Thins

My very first gluten free crackers ever were Blue Diamond Nut Thins. I first purchased them at least 15-20 years ago, long before I went gluten free. At the time, things like almond milk and almond flour were trending and I was actively trying various alternative products that I thought might be healthier for me. These certainly seemed healthier than a basic Ritz cracker or Triscuit, so I gave them a whirl. It didn’t hurt either that Blue Diamond products were made in my hometown, so I had been hooked on their brand, and particularly their flavored almonds (Habanero BBQ and Salt N Vinegar ftw!), for quite some time.

These definitely do not taste like any regular cracker, but I think that’s a big part of their appeal. They are super hard and crispy and have that salty, almost popcorn-like goodness about them, similar to the flavor of a well-salted rice cake. My mom started buying these after I mentioned them to her as well, and both her and my little (at the time) nephew got hooked on them.

Summary: great crunch and flavor, but not a perfect neutral cracker and a little small for canapes.

Milton’s Gluten Free Crackers

The next gluten free cracker I tried was Milton’s many, many years later, after I had confirmed my issues with gluten. I was on one of my regular wine tasting weekend trips to Paso Robles with my gal pals and we stopped at the grocery store once we got into town for breakfast items, charcuterie, fruit, and other snack foods.

We were in the crackers and chips aisle (which I had avoided for many years as I had been eating keto consistently, other than some small cheats when travelling), and I saw that Milton’s, one of my favorite brands of crackers previously, now had gluten free crackers on the shelf. We grabbed a bag of the Gluten Free “Everything” Crackers, as who doesn’t love everything seasoning? The next day, as it was pouring down rain outside, we decided to have our picnic in the car between winery stops. Those crackers were gone in less than 5 minutes, easily! We all loved them. A sure sign of good gluten free food is when gluten eaters love it too!

Summary: These are very tasty, in all flavors, but are not shaped properly for charcuterie or canapes. They have sort of a scoop shape. Between that, the crispiness, and overall flavor, they are actually my favorite dipping cracker. Anything I would dip pita into goes perfectly with the basic gluten free Milton’s sea salt cracker - tzatziki sauce, hummus, pimento cheese, olive tapenade, liver mousse, etc. Really the only drawback is these are packaged in a bag, like chips, and unfortunately this always means lots of crushed crackers in every bag.

Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers

The next gluten free cracker I tried was from Simple Mills several years later. I had still been eating mostly keto, so would only get crackers as a special treat (usually on a wine tasting trip!), and it was always those Milton’s Everything Crackers.

I was at a show at the Hollywood Bowl, which is such an amazing venue. For any event hosted by the LA Philharmonic, you could bring in your own food and wine and have a little picnic either outside the actual amphitheater in the picnic areas, or inside at your seat. We had a sizeable group at this show and everyone brought various foods to pass around and share. At some point, a box of crackers was passed to me that I hadn’t seen before. It was the Simple Mills brand and they were gluten free so I of course had to try them. And now, I had a new favorite gluten free cracker that also had the appropriate shape for a canape or some charcuterie on top, yay!

Summary: Great neutral cracker (plain sea salt) and though still a little small, they can hold up to canapes or some charcuterie.

Back to Nature Multi-Seed Rice Thins

The most recent gluten free cracker I tried are the Back to Nature Multi-Seed Rice Thins. Even though this was most recent, I honestly have no recollection on how I ended up buying these - oh, the joys of aging!

Anyway, somehow I found myself with these crackers and they quickly became a new favorite. These are slightly bigger than the Simple Mills crackers, and also sturdy and flat, so perfect for topping with charcuterie. They have a delicious nutty flavor from the various seeds, which will be complimentary to a basic cheese and salami topping, but might be overpowering if you are serving them with something more delicate that needs a fully neutral cracker.

Summary: These are a great choice for charcuterie spreads when you want a bit more flavor, gluten eaters have all loved them (especially those that love multigrain or seed breads) and they may have a slightly better nutritional profile.
