DOJA Tea Room
What an incredible find in Northeast Portland! I had pretty much given up hope on ever enjoying a high tea out again due to the gluten-heavy prix fixe structure, but was pleased to find the Portland area actually has two tea houses that have a gluten free menu option.
I chose to visit DOJA Tea Room first for their lovely holiday tea menu (pictured below.) I was very impressed with the nice variety of flavors, and even moreso how well their recommended tea list accompanied them. I went with what was described as a “buttery” Taiwanese tea that was so delicious and comforting.
The tea room was fully decked out for the holidays, but thankfully, no obnoxious Mariah Carey blaring through the speakers.
I dined with a friend who had the regular menu, which was shockingly similar. When the tray was presented, the server clearly identified what items were mine and had them basically split down the middle.
Among the standouts were the spinach and artichoke crostini, the egg salad sandwich with savory bacon jam, and honestly it was such a pleasure enjoying a gluten free scone with clotted cream, orange curd and Christmas jam. The latter was just a flood of nostalgia of afternoon teas with my mom, who bakes a mean scone that I haven’t been able to enjoy in years!
DOJA Tea Room was a perfect, stress-free way to spend an afternoon of mild indulgence. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes to be able to go somewhere and safely eat without having to play 20 questions. DOJA also has prix fixe vegan, vegetarian, and dairy free menus, so it’s a perfect spot to gather with friends that have various dietary restrictions. Do be sure to book a reservation in advance!
