Surprising Gluten Free Foods!
So you’re gluten free and have been sticking to your diet, and then one day you realize you’ve been avoiding something that was perfectly safe for you to eat?
I’ve been there and am here to keep you from unnecessarily depriving yourself. Here’s a list of surprising gluten free foods to enjoy!
Macarons
Not to be confused with macaroons (which are definitely not gluten free), macarons are the little merengue like sandwich style cookies you often find in numerous colors and flavors in France and Italy. I knew they had almond flour, but I always assumed they had wheat flour as well. That’s not the case - macarons are normally 100% gluten free. Wish I knew that before my last trip to France!
Pho
It just didn’t occur to me for years to consider that the Pho noodles are rice instead of wheat based. Only thing to be careful of is the sauces and anything that may be added to broth, but generally Pho is gluten free. Enjoy!
Flourless cakes and tortes
Now a flourless chocolate cake could possibly have gluten in it, but the majority of the time it does not. Always ask before ordering and eating!
Hollandaise sauce
Since it’s a sauce, you should always double-check, but traditionally hollandaise sauce does not have any gluten in, so enjoy your eggs benedicts (on gluten free muffin or toast of course!)
Quinoa
I just assumed since it was a health grain it must have gluten in it. Nope! Quinoa is totally gluten free.
Buckwheat
Yes, it has “wheat” in the name, but buckwheat does not have any gluten. I’ve found many gluten free cakes, muffins and other things made with buckwheat.
That’s all for the moment, but I plan to regularly update this page and would love to hear your suggestions!
