Honey Butter Country Fare

A true gem of a completely dedicated gluten free food cart in North Portland. If you miss fried chicken, this is the spot to check out!

I’ve mentioned elsewhere that Portland actually has an incredible number of places that serve gluten free fried chicken. However, many of these are some type of Thai fusion style fried chicken. And while I absolutely love it, some people would just prefer regular fried chicken. This is it!

I ordered the chicken and funnel cake, which is one big slab of fried chicken over a powdered sugar dusted funnel cake.

The chicken is hot and juicy, but it’s that crunchy batter that you come to a place like this for. I’m not sure what their trick is - I’m guessing they may double dredge and double fry here - because the finished crust is thick, incredibly crunchy and not at all greasy. They have a head spinning number of sauces to choose from. I went with the simple honey butter and the mesquite honey for this order. I love hot honey and the mesquite honey was like that, but with a little BBQ flavor flair.

Now onto the funnel cake… oh, my! This brought back memories. Somehow, despite it literally being just fried dough, using a non-wheat dough, this funnel cake has the exact same flavor as the original. And I really appreciate the fact that it’s not overly sweetened at all. You can add peanut butter or honey sauce and whipped cream if you want to sweeten it up. I actually ate most of mine plain - it was that good all by itself!

In addition to fried chicken and funnel cakes, Honey Butter Country Fare serves a variety of corn dogs, and even deep fried Oreos. This is definitely the spot to indulge and feel like a kid again at the county fair! Or a perfect spot to bring the kids for a treat if any suffer from celiac.
